Mass media on the internet: Público - Characteristics


The media that we decided to analize is Público.es, the online edition of Público, a young newspaper compared to other traditional spanish medias, such as El País or ABC, that in few years has found its place through the citizens.






1. POPULARITY

Publico.es has a three-month global Alexa traffic rank of 2,825. Visitors to the site view an average of 2.5 unique pages per day. Approximately 9% of visits to it are referred by search engines. Roughly 52% of visits to the site are bounces (one pageview only), and visitors to Publico.es spend about five minutes per visit to the site and 86 seconds per pageview.

We can identify the news' author most of the times. The name appears on top of the news, between the subtitle and the news itself.

Yes, it is.

Yes, it is possible to access to the printed edition in pdf version.

Yes, to print the newspaper you have to access to an account created on the Publico.es' newsstand.


3.15 Does the medium have a special reports or special coverage or in depth section? Which reports does it include? Are these reports similar to the traditional reports in press or are they like a kind of microsite with sections an their own URL?

Yes, it has. There is a section called "Memoria Pública", for example, where you are able to find all the reports, news, interviews and so on related to the Franquism and the Historic Memory Law that Público has made.

Yes, the online medium has an special version in Catalan.

Yes, it has. There is a special section, at the bottom of the page, called "advertising" where advertirsers can find information about both the internet and paper edition audience's profile, as well as about the spreading of the media and who comercialize it.

Yes, it has.


3.19 Does it have a version for the mobile phone/smartphone/iphone?

Yes, it has.

3.20 Does it have a version for the iPad or similar tablet?

Yes, it has.

Yes, it has.

3.22 Does it have the user the option to register online? With which purpose?

Yes, the user has that option, in order to give an opinion about the news.

3.23 Does the medium contain any type of legal advice? (explain)

Yes, the medium contains a section where it explains all the "rules" regarded to the legal aspect.

Yes, it contains that kind of information. In the "Quiénes" area, the media gives the names of the workers of each section, an their position on the newspaper.

No, the medium doesn't offer any information about the communication group. It just appear the adresss.


4. NEWS CONTENT

4.1 Does it have any latest news section?

It is not a section itself, but in the homepage there is a line where they appear the latest news.

4.2 How are news presented in the homepage? (Description of its most relevant elements)

The homepage is divided in different squares, and each one represents a news. Usually, the main elements of those brief summaries (the first level) are the title (that is also the link to the second level of the news), the subtitle and the number of comments that it has. Sometimes, they have a photograph as well. When you go to that second level, the elements that appear are the title, the subtitle, the author, the place, the date and when was the last actualization made, the news itself (with some photographs) and, finally, the comments that some readers make.


5. INTERACTIVITY TOOLS

5.1 Does the medium contain a blog section?

Yes, it has.

They include the blogs of some collaborators of the newspaper; blogs regarding to a wide section of subjects, such as culture, science, languages, political opinions...


5.3 Is there any possibility to create users' blogs inside the online medium? If so, is it necessary to get registered?

No, it is not.


5.4 Are there author's blogs (this is, no users blogs)? Who are those authors?

Yes, they are. As we say before, the authors are usual collaborators of the newspaper. For example, some of those authors are Arturo Gonzalez, Eugenio Garcia Gascon or Luna Miguel.


5.5 Does the medium have web 2.0 tools to share contents?Which are those tools?

Yes, it has. Those tools are to able the share in Facebook, tuenti, twitter, google buzz, meneame and viadeshare and to send to a friend.


5.6 Does the medium permit to make comments to the published news?

Yes, it does.

5.7 Are those comments subjected to moderation?

Yes, they are. On one hand, the moderator can eliminate the comment and, on the other hand, depending on the punctuation that other users give to the comments, this becomes smaller and it is able even to disappear.


5.8 Are those comments subjected to previous registration?

Yes, they are.


5.9 Does the medium permit to vote news?

Yes, it does.


5.10 Does the medium permit to send the news item to another person's mail?

Yes, it does.

5.11 Does the medium permit to print news item?

Yes, it does.


5.12 Does the medium permit to get in contact with the news item's author?

No, it doesn't.


5.13 Does it have discussion forums? What issues are they about?

No, it hasn't. But there is a section named as "community" where you have to be registered to access to the information other users publish.


5.14 Are there rules to participate in the forums? What do those rules indicate?

As we have said before, you have to be registered to access, so that is the rule of participation that we know.


5. 15 Are the forums subjected to moderation or previous control of messages?

We are not able to give this information.


5.16 Does it have chats? What type?

We don't know if they exist any kind of chats once you are registered as a user, in order to communicate eiht other users, but at least, those chats are not public.


5.17 Does it have digital opinion polls? (usually in the homepage)

Yes, it has. There is even a specifical section for them.

Yes, it has. This section appears on the right hand of the homepage, once you roll down to read it.


5.19 Considering the ranking (hierarchy) of those news, is it similar to the used by the online medium to present its news in the homepage? (most important: up side of the page and the left side)

No, the hierarchy of those news is not that similar to the used by the online media.


5.20 Does the online medium permit users to personalize contents in the homepage?

No, it doesn't.


5.21 Does the online medium permit users to personalize the design (colours and others)?

No, it doesn't, at least not being a current users with no account on the media web.


5.22 Does the online medium permit users to send news, videos, audios, photographs to the newsroom?

Yes, it does.

  3. This medium, like most of them, its similar to ours, but The Guardian is bigger and it has more readers,so its normal that it has a better website with more options.
